Sleeping in underwear could affect your fertility and put you at risk of infection.
Not only does snoozing in the buff provide greater comfort and is less restrictive, it has a number of health benefits. Sleeping naked allows your body to naturally regulate its own temperature, making it less likely for you to sweat.
Dozing off in underwear on can also prevent your intimate area from breathing, sometimes leading to an infection. The NHS claims that one of the causes of thrush is: “wearing tight clothing or synthetic clothing (such as nylon underwear) that prevents ventilation.”
For men, sleeping in tight underwear can crash their manhood, leading to complications with their fertility.
Research from the University of Sheffield and the University of Manchester found that tight-fitting underwear had huge impacts on fertility.
Those who wore loose boxers were found to have a higher-quality sperm count compared to those who restricted themselves to tight briefs.
Gynaecology expert, Dr Alyssa Dweck, explained: “I often tell my patients to sleep without underwear.
“If (the area) is constantly covered – especially by a fabric that’s not moisture-wicking or absorbent – moisture collects, creating the perfect breeding ground for bacteria or yeast.”
For those of you that just can’t get to sleep without pants on, Dr Dweck recommends opting for a loose-fitting pair.
She said: “If there’s ever a time to break out the granny patients, this would be it.”
